Is there mention in Hadith regarding any Du’a to be read after seeing a bad dream?
ANSWER
1) Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
…When one of you sees something that you dislike in a dream, then he should lightly spit/blow on his left side and seek Allah’s protection from the evil of what he saw, for it will not harm him.
Some narrations have the words:
And he should not inform anyone of this dream
(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 3292 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 5857 and 5862)
2) Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘If one of you becomes afraid in his sleep, then he should say:
(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3528, with a sound chain)
Although the above narration does not specifically state becoming afraid due to seeing a bad dream, the Hadith is general and could include this instance.
Shaykh Al Muhaddith Muhammad Zakariyya (rahimahullah) has stated in his commentary on Sahih Bukhari, under the chapter of ‘The virtue of sleeping with wudu’, ‘If a person sleeps with wudu, he will be protected from bad dreams and from the evil whisperings of Shaytan.’
(Taqrir Bukhari, vol.2 pg. 78)
